RN Refresher Course for

nurses returning to practice.

A 100-hour voluntary RN training and skills refresher for U.S.-licensed registered nurses. Built for RNs returning after a career break, holding inactive licenses, or rebuilding clinical confidence before re-entry. Online theory, hands-on skills lab, and ALEX AI clinical simulation. No FBON letter required.

— Here is how it works

Three components.
One clinical comeback.

The 100 hours combine theory, hands-on skills lab work, and live clinical simulation through ALEX. Most nurses complete the program in 8 weeks; pacing flexes to fit your schedule.

💻 Theory

Didactic

Online modules covering current clinical standards, medication safety, pathophysiology updates, and evidence-based practice changes since your last assignment.

🩺Skills Lab

Hands-on

In-person practice on the procedures that decay first — IV insertion, sterile technique, Foley placement, medication administration, patient assessment.

🤖 Simulation

ALEX AI

High-fidelity manikin work and AI scenario simulation. Build clinical judgment, prioritization, and emergency-readiness before stepping back onto a unit.

Which track is right for me?

Voluntary refresher or mandated remediation?

Both programs are at Nuvelle. The right one depends on whether the Florida Board of Nursing has directed you to enroll, or whether you are choosing this on your own.

The refresher track (You are here)

RN Refresher

Choose this if you are: a U.S.-licensed RN returning to practice after a break, an RN with an inactive or recently lapsed license, or a nurse rebuilding clinical confidence before bedside re-entry.

  • 100 hours over 8 weeks

  • No FBON authorization letter required

  • Online theory + skills lab + ALEX simulation

  • Outcome: clinical confidence and current-standard practice readiness

Board Mandated

RN Remediation (FBON-Approved)

You need this if you: failed the NCLEX three times, hold a license lapsed 5+ years, or received an FBON letter directing remediation.

  • 176 hours (80 theory + 96 clinical)

  • FBON authorization letter required for clinical

  • FBON-ready completion paperwork

  • Outcome: satisfies Board requirement for NCLEX retake or reinstatement

  • See the mandated track→

Not sure which track fits?

A 20-minute consult with a Nuvelle nurse educator answers that question and maps the right next step. Free, no commitment.

— Who Is Eligible

Five paths into
the voluntary track.

If any one of these describes your situation, the voluntary RN refresher is built for you. You must be a U.S.-licensed Registered Nurse to enroll.

  • Licensed RNs returning to practice

Whether you have stepped away from nursing for a few months or several years, the course provides a structured pathway to rebuild confidence, update skills, and transition smoothly back into clinical environments.

  • RNs with an inactive or lapsed U.S. license

Nurses whose licenses have gone inactive or who are in the process of reactivation and need refreshed skills can use this course to prepare for re-entry. Note: if your Florida license has been lapsed 5+ years, the FBON-approved remediation track is required instead.

  • RNs seeking clinical confidence before bedside practice

Some RNs simply want supervised practice to feel confident and safe before accepting a new clinical assignment. The skills lab and simulation hours give you that runway in a no-risk environment.

  • RNs updating skills before applying for new roles

If you are preparing for a hospital, clinic, or home health position and want to sharpen competency before re-entering the workforce, the program offers hands-on practice using modern procedures and current standards.

  • RNs completing an employer-recommended refresher

Some employers request or encourage a skills update before a new role begins. The program satisfies that need with structured instruction, documented hours, and a Nuvelle completion certificate for HR records.

— Frequently Asked

Common questions.

Most of the questions below come from the intake calls our team takes every week. If yours is not here, the fastest way to a real answer is a free 20-minute call.

  • It is a 100-hour, 8-week program for U.S.-licensed Registered Nurses who want to refresh clinical skills, rebuild confidence, or prepare to return to nursing practice. The program includes didactic theory, hands-on skills lab training, and ALEX AI clinical simulation. It is voluntary - no Florida Board of Nursing mandate is required to enroll.

  • The voluntary refresher is 100 hours over 8 weeks and is taken by choice . no Board letter required.
The mandated RN remediation course is 176 hours (80 theory + 96 clinical) and is required by the Florida Board of Nursing for nurses who failed the NCLEX three times, have a license lapsed 5+ years, or were directed by the Board. The voluntary course is for nurses returning to practice; the mandated course clears a regulatory requirement.

  • The refresher is 100 hours total, completed over 8 weeks. Hours include online theory modules, in-person nursing skills lab training, and clinical simulation through ALEX. Pacing can be adjusted to fit your schedule, and enrollment is open year-round.

  • Any U.S.-licensed Registered Nurse including those returning to practice after a career break, RNs with inactive or lapsed licenses preparing for reactivation, nurses seeking clinical confidence before bedside re-entry, RNs updating skills before applying for new roles, and nurses completing an employer-recommended skills refresher.

  • Hands-on skills include: IV insertion and line management, wound care and sterile technique, Foley catheter insertion, medication administration, patient assessment, transfer, mobility and safety techniques, and vital signs monitoring. Each skill is practiced under RN supervision until the standard is met.

  • AI-powered scenarios through ALEX and high-fidelity manikin simulations designed to strengthen clinical judgment, prioritization, delegation, emergency readiness, SBAR communication, and safe decision-making. ALEX adapts to your interventions in real time — no two simulation runs are identical.

  • The Florida Board of Nursing wants to make sure you’re fully prepared to provide top-notch care before you return to work. This program helps refresh your nursing skills and gets you ready for current healthcare standards.

  • An RN license is considered lapsed if it has not been renewed by the biennial renewal deadline set by the Florida Board of Nursing. If a license has been inactive or expired for five years or more, the Board requires completion of an approved RN remediation program; not the voluntary refresher before reinstatement. Shorter lapses may be eligible for the voluntary refresher track. A free consult is the fastest way to confirm which fits your situation.

  • Not by itself. The voluntary refresher is a clinical skills update — it does not satisfy the Florida Board of Nursing requirement for license reinstatement after a 5+ year lapse. If your license has been inactive for five years or more, you need the FBON-approved 176-hour remediation course instead. A nurse educator can confirm your situation on a free consult.
